The Turning Point

Thursday, August 22, 2019

Today we awoke to rainy and cold weather. The temperature outside had dropped into the 40s so we decided to turn on the heater for the first time on this trip. It quickly brought a cozy warmth to the RV. Although we still have two and a half weeks, today marks the turning point of our trip. Our Newfoundland route will backtrack to the Port aux Basques ferry and from now on, each travel day will bring us closer to home.  But, we hope to still enjoy new sites and adventures, and in Holyoke Mass, reunite with our Ford Focus.

Disembarking (not us) from the Labrador Ferry
After a slow start this morning, we drove south along the coast of the Northern Peninsula as the weather slowly improved. Along the way we made a brief detour into St. Barbe to see the ferry to Labrador. Further down the road, we exercised extreme self discipline to not stop to visit those Thrombolites again. Outside of Port aux Choix, we stopped for diesel, bread and beer. We also lunched at Pizza Delight. I had finished reading my third ebook and so, took advantage of the wi-fi to download a fourth ebook as we were waiting for the Greek vegetarian pizza to be made and delivered.

Our River of Ponds RV Site
Mid-afternoon, we arrived at the River of Ponds Park & Campground with sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-70s. There were only a few RVs at the campground so we could choose our site. We set up in a level site overlooking the small inland lake. From the site, a grassy area gently sloped down to a sandy beach and a group of children were have fun swimming in the lake. We put on our bathing suits and waded in. The shallow waters were warm but the water temperature became colder and colder the deeper we ventured. We waded around for awhile and then spread our towels out on the grass and enjoyed lying in the warm sun noting the contrast in weather from this morning.

Early evening, we walked back to the campground store so Jane could have some soft-serve ice cream. Back at the RV, we worked two more of the puzzles from the 12 pack while listening to a CD sampler of traditional Newfoundland music, then headed to bed.
