Relaxation & Hiking

Thursday, April 10, 2025

Today was a relaxing one. After breakfast and (finally) coffee, we took care of some RV things. Jane climbed up and cleaned the solar panels, and in the process, befriended our neighbor Dennis, who was meticulously detailing his rig. Later on, I topped off the DEF tank and emptied our gray and black water tanks.

Once we unplugged the RV, Jane drove us about 25 minutes south to the Enchanted Forest Sanctuary. We started at the Nature Center, then set out on the longest trail—about 5 kilometers long—through the forest. It was again a real treat to walk through an environment so different from what we’re used to. The trail led us through a mix of six distinct habitat types: mesic hammock, hydric hammock, oak scrub, scrubby flatwoods, basin swamp, basin marsh, depression marsh, and ruderal zones.

The diversity along the route was impressive. We crossed several bridges and boardwalks and got to admire a wide range of plant life. I even reconnected with a couple of old friends from my Master’s research days at the University of Florida—slash pine and sand pine. Wildlife-wise, the stars of the day were the numerous lizards darting across and alongside the trail. And best of all? No mosquitoes, deer flies, or other biting insects made an appearance.

After our hike through the Enchanted Forest, Jane drove us back to the campground via a scenic route that wound through Titusville. This gave us a chance to enjoy its quaint historic district in the daylight—a charming detour.

Once back at the campground, we reconnected the RV and took a short stroll around the grounds. We always find it fun to see how fellow RVers set up and settle in—there’s a quiet kind of camaraderie in it. The rest of the afternoon and evening slipped by gently. We read, blogged, and caught up on some TV, savoring the simple pleasure of doing not much at all. Relaxation rules!
