Mr. & Mrs. Blueberry Greeted Us on our Return Visit to McKay’s |
Well, Tropical Depression Erin arrived just as we started breaking camp mid-morning today and dogged us with clouds and rain most of our trip. We quickly passed out of Nova Scotia and into New Brunswick making good time on major highways. Before leaving Canada, we had to stop for diesel fuel and more blueberries. We again visited McKay’s Wild Blueberries Stand and Jane bought four jars of jam and a blueberry pie (that she stored in the sink). Unfortunately, we couldn’t bring fresh blueberries across the U.S. border.
Despite some trepidation on our part, crossing the border back into the U.S. was no big deal. We handed the border agent our passports and a sheet of paper summarizing the costs of Canadian goods and volume of alcoholic products that we were bringing back. We actually had very little of each. The agent then entered the RV and checked the refrigerator for raw fruits and vegetables then looked under the glass stove lid (!?) He then returned to his booth and gave us clearance to re-enter the U.S.
We Crossed the U.S Border into Calais, Maine |
We drove into Calais, Maine and found a public parking lot to leave the RV while we walked around. At first glance Calais looked like an attractive touristy town with a welcome center, light post banners and a trail along the water. But as we walked along the streets, we realized that many buildings were closed and empty. It seemed the town was struggling to recover from a severe economic collapse. We really only found one option for lunch, Karen’s Cafe, where we had a decent meal and then walked back to the RV and continued on our way.
Welcome to Pumpkin Patch RV Park |
We encountered traffic around Bangor but as we arrived at the Pumpkin Patch RV Park just west of the city, Erin’s influence was lessening and skies were brightening. After checking in, setting up, and relaxing awhile, we walked just down the road to Just Down the Road Family Restaurant adjacent to the RV park.
Melissa & Friend Entertaining Just down the Road |
We order beers from Maine breweries and Mediterranean flatbreads. As we waited to be served, the place started filling up with local folks. A local musician, who only introduced herself as Melissa, entertained us with her singing accompanied by acoustic guitar. She also asked a couple of people in the audience to join her onstage. Many in the crowd knew Melissa and were very attentive, singing along on some songs. Jane and I enjoyed the good music and food. The evening was reminiscent of some of our Cape Breton and Newfoundland musical experiences but with a more familiar repertoire.
After dinner and music, Jane and I walked back to the RV and admired the starry clear sky. We picked up about 10 local tv channels over the air and so, were able to catch up on some news before retiring.
