Change of Campgrounds

Tuesday, May 14, 2024

This morning, it was time to move on. After breaking camp, we separately drove the RV and car back into Bryce City near the park’s entrance. At a large Sinclair Dinocare facility that catered to RVs, I filled the fuel tank with diesel, added DEF, and filled the propane tank. Meanwhile, Jane worked hard in a carwash bay to clean her car to a shiny new gleam. We then hitched the car to the RV and were on our way to a new campground.

We headed west on Byway 12 back past the campground and again passed through Red Canyon with its striking geologic features.

Shortly after Red Canyon, we turned south onto US-89 and continued on it for about 90 miles crossing from Utah back into Arizona. We briefly drove through rain during this portion of the drive which was one looong downhill; we were descending along the Grand Staircase. Eventually, south of Fredonia, AZ, we turned onto a dusty unpaved four-mile road (USFS 245 & 461) through the Kaibab National Forest. Fortunatly, we didn’t encounter any vehicles on this narrow road and all the fallen trees had already been cleared.

Our vehicles arrived at Kaibab Camper Village a dusty mess. To Jane’s dismay, our toad that was beautifully clean a few hours ago, was now dirtier than ever. After some confusion at check-in, we eventally settled into Site 42, a pull-through with full hook-ups nestled in a ponderosa pine forest.

We decided to eat a late lunch at the nearby Jacob Lake Inn. There, we sampled a prickly pear wheat ale with our lunch. I couldn’t resist trying their peach pie a la mode for dessert. Jane bought four of their famous large homemade cookies to take back to the RV where we chilled and read info about tomorrow’s adventure, visiting the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
