Twillingate

Friday, August 16, 2019

Today we rambled along the northern coast from Lumsden to Twillingate driving through harbor towns (Musgrave Harbour, Carmansvlille) and included a stop at a wetlands interpretative center. Along the way, we pulled over at Rogers Cove of Gander Bay to have lunch with a waterfront view.

Before searching for the campground, we visited the Auk Island Vinery. Perhaps, berriery would be a more appropriate name because none for their products were made from grapes. There were “vines” from blueberries partridbeberries, cloudberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, yellowberries, chartreuseberries, jupiterberries, starberries, and galaxyberries. Yep, you could get wine made from about any berry or berry combination, plus rhubarb. Jane and I shared two tastings, so we each sampled a total of 10 of their products. Actually, all were drinkable and there were several that I liked. Before departing, we purchased a couple of bottles of wine that we mutually agreed upon.

We then found the campground, Peyton’s Woods RV Park, around  mid-afternoon and checked in but immediately left to explore. First, we visited the Twillingate Museum in the former rectory of the First Anglican Church. There we learned that the town was originally named after the French cove of Toulinguet and that this moniker was later anglicized to Twillingate. The museum had a whole room devoted to a native women, Georgina Stirling, who in the late 1800s became a world-renowned prima donna soprano opera singer under the stage name of Maria Toulinguet.

From the museum, we departed for the Long Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse was nice but the surrounding views were astounding. We walked along a short path behind the lighthouse for breath-taking views down cliffs sharply descending into the blue sea where white waves were crashing over boulders. Wow, such rugged beauty!

After the inspiring views at the lighthouse, we sunk back into mundanity and drove to the only station that we’d seen in town to fill up for tomorrow’s long trip. From there, we sought a beer and dinner and wound up at the Pier 39 Restaurant & Pub. We sat at a shaded table on a deck with a view of the bay across the street. I had a delicious lobster bisque with a salmon entree while Jane had salad and a seafood (crab & lobster) roll. Another nice meal with great ambiance.

After dinner, we returned to our campsite and set up the RV for the evening. We then took a short walk to the coast and again found a lone bench on a hill facing west over the water and watched the sunset in the cool evening air. We certainly have become spoiled. Tomorrow we plan to complete the circuit back to the west coast and begin our journey north up that side of The Rock.
