Bye-Bye Newfoundland

Waiting for the Ferry (and Breakfast #2)
Today we got up early, broke camp, and drove about 45 minutes to the Port aux Basques ferry. After checking in, an inspector entered our RV and checked out our refrigerator – no potatoes or plants with soil allowed. They even washed off dirty vehicles. We were hoping for a free RV wash but were only waved through. We lined up in one of two lanes for RVs (#20) and because we had arrived 1.5 hrs before loading, headed into the ferry terminal building. There, we had a second breakfast of egg & cheese sandwiches, potato wedges, and coffee before everyone was summoned back to their vehicles. The ferry loading proceeded orderly and the return trip was similar to the outbound trip (see Newfoundland Ho! blog). We ate a late lunch in the ferry restaurant at a window table. This ferry completed the passage an hour early but sat still then spun around in the Sydney harbor for about 45 minutes performing some kind of maintenance procedures prior to docking.

Goodbye to The Rock

After disembarking, we only had a 20 minute drive to the North Sydney KOA Campground where we had stayed before departing for Newfoundland. We had to wait in line to check in because other RVs had also just arrived from the ferry. Jane learned from the campground owners that the outgoing ferry to Newfoundland that was due to depart at 7 pm had been cancelled due to ominous weather reports and so they had opened up another section of the campground to accommodate those disappointed RVers. Now, we have set our clocks back 1/2 hour to Marine Atlantic Time and plan to cozily hole up in the RV for this evening.. If you have to leave Newfoundland, Cape Breton is an excellent landing point, but unfortunately, we’ll only be here for two more days.
