A Rainy Travel Day

Monday, September 2, 2019
As we departed the Naples KOA, Jane went into the campground office to return the cable box and thank Con for his help and the lovely stay we had had there. Our plan was to identify and spend the night at a campground near Holyoke, MA, so that tomorrow we could pick up the car we had deserted almost six weeks ago at Marcotte Ford.
The trip started out nice with views along the coast of Sebago Lake and rural Maine landscape. Jane started navigating via maps to avoid a long interstate delay ahead we could see on the phone gps. Her selected route worked well but eventually, we, too, were slowed down by the Labor Day traffic. We stopped at a Friendly’s Restaurant in Rochester, NH, for lunch. I couldn’t resist trying their lobster quesadillas (yum!) and we both indulged with ice cream desserts, the highlight of a long and dreary travel day.
The traffic and the rain increased dramatically as we were going around the outskirts of Boston and westward. At one point, while the traffic was at a standstill, Jane took the wheel for the remainder of the trip. What a slow dreary experience today’s drive was! On I-90, as we passed exit 4 to Springfield/Holyoke we felt shivers run down our spines from the bad karma of that fateful spot where our toad’s transmission had failed. We eventually exited the interstate and drove for about 30 minutes through rural areas to arrive at the Prospect Mountain Campground near Granville. Jane had made reservations and paid en route so, when we arrived, there was a packet taped to the office door for us.
After about seven hours of intense driving (not including the hour lunch stop) we were glad to set up and relax. Rain began shortly after we arrived so we enjoyed a beer with snacks and worked the ninth puzzle from the 12 pack. We were entertained by the Maine public television channel that was broadcasting shows featuring travel in Canada including one about Newfoundland. As the rain continued to pour outside, we headed to bed safe and dry in the RV.
