We departed the Goodland KOA Campground about 8:30 (early for us) but soon lost an hour as we crossed the Sherman County Line and entered Central Time Zone. We drove steadily east on I-70 for around 6 hours including time to stop for lunch in the RV at a rest area near Ellsworth and to refuel near Salina. After checking in at the Topeka/Capital [sic] City KOA and setting up the RV in Site 35, it was late in the afternoon.
We headed to downtown Topeka (pop. ~124,000) to at least get a glimpse of the Capitol Building which had closed at 4:00 pm. We parked right in front of the building and enjoyed walking around its well-maintained surrounds. It was delightful seeing green grass and thriving trees after being in the drier harsher conditions further west. There was a statue depicting President Eisenhower as a general addressing troops before the D-Day landings. Earlier, we had passed an interstate exit for Abilene, KS, where his Presidential Library, Museum and boyhood home are located.
We left the Capitol Building and drove back toward the campground pleased with the light city traffic and stopped at the Blind Tiger Brewery for beer and dinner. We each ordered a flight of four beers to sample from the large and diverse selections. I particularly enjoyed their award winning bock.
Upon returning to our motorhome we discovered we had a new neighbor, a horse whose owner later took him for a walk around the campground. We played some Sequence and Rummikub then took a walk around the campground including a muddy path that had been mowed through an adjacent meadow where we saw rabbits and a deer. We hope to turn in early tonight because we have another long travel day scheduled for tomorrow.
