Wine Time

Jane woke up late this morning (about 9:30) to the dinging of incoming text messages. Nacny was inviting us over to their Riesling Cabin at Buttonwood Grove Winery to spend some time with Cathy and Pat before they had to leave for their jobs in Buffalo. So, we hurried over there (only two miles from our campground) and enjoyed touring the cabin and sitting outside around the fire ring chatting in the cool morning air. Eventually, Cathy and Pat had to depart. After lingering around awhile longer, we decided to have lunch at Wolffy’s Grill and Marina on Cayuga Lake. John drove the four of us there and upon arrival, we noticed Pat’s car in the parking lot. Sure enough, they also were lunching at Wolffy’s. We repeated our goodbyes to them as we were waiting for our meal to be served. After a good lunch with wine (our beverage du jour), we headed to Seneca Falls.

Besides being the inspiration for Bedford Falls, Seneca Falls was also the site of the first Women’s Rights Convention in the U.S. The National Park Service operates a museum dedicated to the cause that we toured learning about the historic efforts of women to improve their societal status and gain the right to vote. Next to the museum we also toured a restoration of the Wesleyan Chapel where the Seneca Falls Convention was held in July 1948.

We left Seneca Falls and headed west through Geneva to Ravines Wine Cellar on the west side of Seneca Lake. Inside the rustic (non-air-contitioned) barn-like tasting room, we sampled Ravines wines. Nancy and John belong to the winery’s club and had arranged to pick up this month’s delivery in person to save on shipping charges. In the air-conditioned check-out room, Jane & I purchased 2.5 bottles of wine (with the 20% membership discount) while Nancy and John purchased more bottles to supplement their monthly order. So, John & I carted two boxes of wine back to their car before departing.

After Ravines, we headed back east to the Buttonwood Grove Winery for a second tasting. We sat in a new air-conditioned room for this tasting and were served complimentary bread and cheese. Jane & I purchased a couple more bottles of wine and a block of the excellent cheese we had sampled. After the tasting, we headed back to the Riesling Cabin to relax. Jane made a quick run back to our motorhome and returned with cheese and crackers. Nancy opened a bottle of wine and we snacked for awhile as the winds increased and a brooding storm in the distance crept ever nearer. Eventually, we were forced to seek the shelter of the cabin’s front porch. Once the storm had passed, we took a brief walk around the vineyard inspecting the grapes (which were still rather small) of various cultivars, then Jane and I returned to our motorhome for the night.
